ULTRAKIT · WIDGET #173

A picture, a number or a chart stays pinned on screen while the story scrolls past and changes it — the way big newsrooms tell long-form stories. Seven looks, soft motion, and it works beautifully on phones.

Long read · Mill Creek

It started with twelve neighbors and forty trash bags

In June, a handful of people met at the old footbridge with gloves and a borrowed pickup. By noon they had pulled out two shopping carts, a mattress and more plastic than anyone wanted to count.

July

Then the whole town started showing up

Word spread through school groups and church newsletters. Every Saturday the yellow shirts came back — four hundred volunteers by the end of the summer.

August

“I grew up here and never once saw the bottom of the creek.”

Seventeen-year-old volunteer Hannah Miller spent eight Saturdays on the banks. Now she leads the Tuesday group.

One year later

The water came back

Water-quality tests are the best in twenty years, and kids swim where the carts used to be. The next goal: the whole 14-mile watershed.

DATA STORY · BUDGET

Each paragraph lights up the bar it talks about — and the last one changes the numbers to show next year’s plan.

The big picture

85 cents of every dollar feed people

Here is how a typical $1 gift was spent last year. Only 15 cents kept the lights on and raised the next dollar.

Meals

62¢ buys and cooks food

Bulk buying through regional food networks makes each dollar go about three times further than at the store.

Kids

14¢ keeps kids fed all summer

When school lunches stop, our summer program serves 900 kids a day at parks and libraries.

Running costs

10¢ for trucks, rent and fridges

Two refrigerated trucks and one warehouse — shared with three other nonprofits to keep costs low.

Next year

The 2026 plan: even more to meals

A new partnership with local farms moves 3 more cents into food and cuts fundraising costs.
