The 2026 Small Business Outlook

We surveyed 1,200 owners of small businesses across all 50 states about hiring, prices and what they expect for the rest of the year. The mood is cautious, but far from gloomy.

Three findings stood out. The first is that owners are hiring again — but not in the roles you might expect, and not in the places that led the last recovery.

City council voted 7–2 on Tuesday night to approve the downtown transit plan, ending a two-year fight over bus lanes, parking and who pays for the new stations.

The vote came after four hours of public comment. Business owners on Main Street were split almost down the middle, and the deciding votes came from two members who had opposed the plan in the spring.

The last lighthouse keeper on Lake Superior still climbs 117 steps every morning, though the light hasn’t needed him in years. He goes up anyway, he says, because somebody should.

We spent a week with him in October, the month the lake turns from blue to steel.

MOBILE-FIRST · BOTTOM SHEET

On a real post it slides up from the bottom of the screen when the reader reaches the end of the teaser, and can be tucked down with the handle. Here it stays inside the demo.

By 9 a.m. the line outside the new bakery on Elm Street already wraps around the block. Nobody in it seems to mind — the owner hands out coffee and yesterday’s croissants while they wait.

What she hasn’t told anyone yet is that the building is about to be sold.
