Summit Fever: Knowing When to Turn Around

The smartest hikers set a turnaround time.

The summit is right there. You can see the cairn on top, maybe a few hundred feet above you. Your legs are tired, the clouds are darker than they were an hour ago and you are well behind schedule. But you have come so far, and the top is so close. That powerful urge to keep going no matter what has a name among mountaineers: summit fever. It is one of the most dangerous feelings in the mountains, because many mountain accidents happen on the way down, after people push too hard to reach the top. Learning to recognize it, and to turn around, is one of the most important skills any hiker can build.

What summit fever really is

Summit fever is not a lack of knowledge. Most people who push too far know the warning signs. It is a mix of goal fixation, sunk cost and group pressure that makes it hard to change plans once you are committed. You drove four hours to get here. You told your friends you would make it. The forecast said the storms would hold off until later. Each of those thoughts nudges you upward when the smart move is to head back down.

The descent is where the danger often hides. Tired legs are more likely to slip. Concentration fades. Afternoon weather moves in. Daylight runs short. A hiker who reaches the top with nothing left in the tank still has the hardest half of the day ahead of them, often in worse conditions than the climb.
