What Therapy Is Really Like (and How to Start)

Finding a therapist, the first session and what to expect.

Dr. Maya Lin6 min read

Starting therapy can feel daunting. Knowing what to expect helps. For many of us, the hardest part is not the therapy itself but everything that comes before it: deciding we could use support, figuring out who to call, wondering whether our problems are “big enough” and imagining what will happen once we walk into that first room. If you have been circling the idea for a while, this guide is for you. We will walk through how to find a therapist, what the first session is usually like and a few ways to take the very first step.

We are a wellbeing magazine, not a clinic, so think of this as a friendly overview rather than professional advice. Every therapist works a little differently, and your experience will be your own. But understanding the general shape of the process can make it feel far less mysterious.

Is therapy for me?

You do not need to be in crisis to see a therapist. People start therapy for all kinds of reasons: stress at work, grief, a big life change, relationship trouble, anxiety that has been creeping up, low mood that will not lift or simply a sense that something feels off. Some people go to work through a specific problem for a few months. Others find it helpful as ongoing support over a longer period.
