What Does a Music Producer Actually Do?

Part coach, part engineer, part therapist.

Lucy Ford6 min read

Read the credits on almost any record and you will find the word “producer.” On some albums it belongs to a famous name. On others it is a friend of the band, or the artist themselves. But ask most music fans what a producer actually does, and the answers get fuzzy fast. A producer guides a recording from idea to finished track. That simple sentence hides a job that is part coach, part engineer, part project manager and, according to nearly everyone we talked to, part therapist.

To understand the role, we spent time with producers working in home studios, small commercial rooms and a busy studio in Nashville. The job looked different in every room, but the core purpose was always the same: help the artist make the best possible version of their music.

The big picture

Producers help choose songs, arrangements and the overall sound. Before a single note is recorded, a producer often sits down with the artist to listen to demos, talk about influences and decide which songs belong on the record. Not every good song fits every album. A producer helps shape a collection that feels like a whole.
