Studio Apartment Layouts That Work

Zones, rugs and a bed that hides.

Theo Hart6 min read

In a studio, every piece of furniture has to define a zone. There are no walls to tell you where the living room ends and the bedroom begins, so your sofa, your rug, your bookcase and even your lamps take on that job. Arrange them carelessly and the apartment feels like a storage unit with a bed in it. Arrange them with intention and a single room can hold a cozy living area, a real place to eat, a quiet corner to work and a bedroom that feels restful. We studied studio layouts from Boston to San Diego, and the ones that work best share a few clear principles. Here is how to apply them to yours.

Map your studio first

Before you move a single piece, sketch your floor plan on graph paper or in a free online room planner. Mark the windows, doors, closet, radiators, outlets and the kitchen area. Note which direction the light comes from and where the natural walking paths fall, such as from the front door to the kitchen and from the bed to the bathroom.

Then list the zones you truly need. Most studio dwellers want four: sleeping, living, eating and working. Some combine eating and working at one table. Others need a spot for a hobby, like a sewing machine or a keyboard. Be honest about how you live. If you never host dinner, a full dining table may be wasted space, while a bigger sofa might matter a lot.
